Today, Apple revealed completely redesigned Mac mini models with Thunderbolt 5 connectivity, two front-facing USB-C ports, a significantly smaller casing, the M4 and M4 Pro chips, and more.

This product update is the first redesign of the Mac mini in more than ten years. Now only five by five inches in size, the enclosure has a new thermal architecture that directs air upward through the foot of the device to various system levels.

The M4 or M4 Pro chip, which supports a 14-core CPU, a 20-core GPU, and up to 64GB of memory, can be used with the new Mac mini. In addition to having a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU, the Mac mini with the M4 chip now comes with 16GB of unified memory as standard. The memory bandwidth of the M4 Pro is 273GB/s.

According to Apple, the M4 Mac mini outperforms the 2020 M1 model by up to 1.8 times in CPU and 2.2 times in GPU performance. The GPU in the M4 Pro is reportedly up to twice as powerful as the GPU in the standard M4, with up to 20 cores. Together with a significantly more potent Neural Engine, both chips introduce hardware-accelerated ray tracing to the Mac mini for the first time.

The M4 Pro model has three Thunderbolt 5 ports on the back and two USB-C ports on the front. Thunderbolt 5 connectivity, which can transfer data at up to 120 Gb/s—more than doubling the throughput of Thunderbolt 4—is being included on a Mac for the first time. Thunderbolt 4 ports are still available on the M4 model.

Additionally, the new device is Apple’s first carbon-neutral Mac. The M4 and M4 Pro Mac mini will go on sale on November 8 and are currently available for pre-order at a starting price of $599.
