AirPods with a new charging case that uses USB-C instead of Lightning could be unveiled at Apple’s September 12 iPhone 15 launch.
The next Apple Event will take place on September 12, 2023, and many are already making predictions about what we might see at the event. Apple is expected to unveil new AirPods alongside the highly anticipated iPhone 15 models on September 12.
Mark Gurman of Bloomberg reports that in an upcoming update to the AirPods, Apple will incorporate a USB-C charging connector in the case itself. The widely speculated transition to USB-C appears to coincide with Apple’s planned departure from Lightning as the primary physical connection standard for the iPhone 15 models.
Gurman doesn’t give much away about what, if anything, will be new or different with the revised AirPods. It’s possible that the only thing Apple modifies is the port that allows for USB-C connections.
With Apple’s decision to remove Lightning from the iPhone, it’s possible that the AirPods may mark the beginning of the company’s transition away from its long-standing accessory connector.
